HARROGATE, Tenn. | The No. 6 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln Memorial by scores of 29-13 and 14-2 at Hennon Field on Wednesday afternoon. UAH improves to 19-4-1, while LMU slips to 17-12.
The Chargers had a record-setting performance at the plate in the opener on Wednesday, as the 29 runs scored are the most for a road game and tie the most for a single game in program history. The previous record for runs in an away game was set on April 23, 1996 at Alabama A&M, while the previous run total of 29 occurred on Feb. 25, 1996 against Kentucky Wesleyan.
Senior
Ryan Barnes started the offense with a three-run home run in the top of the first, followed by
AJ Walden's third homer of the season, a two-run shot, to put UAH ahead 5-0 heading to the bottom of the first.
After starting pitcher
Heath McRae worked a scoreless first, the UAH offense erupted for 14 runs in the top of the second to take a commanding 19-0 advantage. Back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by
Brandon Lawing,
Chandler Brock and Barnes kick-started the rally, which was extended by a
Ben Hall RBI double and a Walden two-RBI single before LMU went to the bullpen.
Immediately following the pitching change,
Colton Simbeck launched a two-run home run to bring the rally to eight, which was pushed to 14 thanks to RBI by Brock,
Trey Mathis, Hall and
Tanner Cimo and a two-RBI double by Barnes. The Chargers continued to rally with six runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and a single run in the seventh inning.
Lincoln Memorial's offense was successful with a six-run rally in the bottom of the third and three-run rallies in the fifth and seventh, but the Railsplitters could not match the UAH torrid offense as the final score went 29-13.
Barnes and Walden tied for a game-high six RBI in game one, which are the most in a single game for a Charger this season. A Huntsville native, Barnes finished the first game 3-for-5 with six RBI and four run scored. Brock, Cimo and Fox each had three-hit performances as well.
McRae was credited with the win in game one to bring him to 2-0 this season, after 2.0 innings with one run allowed. UAH relievers Chase McRae,
Hunter Skipper,
Charlie Weaver and
Chris Pennell combined for 5.0 frames with 12 earned runs, six walks and four strikeouts.
The Chargers continued to have success at the plate early in the 14-2 win in game two, as the Blue and White rallied for seven runs in the top of the second. Cimo, Simbeck and
Zach Dugas each scored on an error to LMU shortstop Ryan Burlison, followed by an RBI single from
Brandon Lawing. Barnes capped off the inning with a three-run homer to make it 7-0 UAH.
LMU cut into the Chargers lead with one run in the bottom of the second, but UAH responded for one run on a Hall solo home run in the third inning. The Railsplitters posted a run in the bottom of the third, but were limited four hits over 6.0 innings pitched by UAH starter
Logan Crook on Wednesday. Crook improved to 1-0 with the win.
UAH added one run in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh to bring the game to its 14-2 final score. Barnes had another tremendous game going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two homers and two runs scored to bring his doubleheader totals to seven runs, six hits, 10 RBI, one double and three home runs.
The Chargers collectively registered 39 RBI on Wednesday, including a program record 29 in the doubleheader opener. UAH batted .436 (31-for-71) in the two-game set.
The Blue and White look ahead to a three-game, GSC series against rival North Alabama this weekend in Florence. The series begins on Saturday with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m., and wraps up with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
