FLORENCE, Ala. | In a battle between a pair of nationally-ranked teams, it was host No. 15 North Alabama that picked up the doubleheader sweep on Saturday, defeating No. 7 UAH 2-0 in nine innings in the first contest before holding on for a 3-2 in the second contest. The Chargers slip to 23-7 (14-4 Gulf South Conference) with the setbacks, while UNA improves to 27-5 (12-4 GSC).
Â
The two teams will wrap up the series in Florence on Sunday with a single game slated for a 2 p.m. start.
Â
UAH struck first in the nightcap as
Victoria Crumpton singled through the left side in the top of the second to plate
Michal Robertson, but the 1-0 lead lasted only until the bottom of the third when the Lions plated a pair of runs to go in front 2-1.
Â
Crumpton then tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fifth as she scored on a passed ball, but the Lions again had an answer with a run in the bottom frame of the inning to back in front by a 3-2 score.
Â
The Chargers threatened in the top of the seventh with runners at first and second with just one out, but a hard-hit liner from
Haley Thompson was snagged by Hillary Carpenter in the circle who fired it to first for the game-ending double play.
Â
UNA outhit UAH 10-6 in the contest, as Crumpton and
Emily Glover both had a pair in the game to lead the Chargers.
Â
Glover (4-3) was charged with the loss in the circle, entering in relief of
Taylor Doriety and tossing three innings while striking out three and giving up three hits in addition to the go-ahead run.
Â
The day's first game was a terrific pitcher's duel that saw Reagan Tittle provide the contest with its only runs as she hit a two-run walk-off homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, and that long fly lifted BreeAnna to her 11th win of the season in the circle for UNA.
Â
Kimberly Jack picked up the tough-luck loss in the contest, striking out four and scattering just five hits to move to 9-2 on the season.
Â
UAH's biggest threat came in the top of the fifth when
Abby Roberts was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before moving to second on a Glover sacrifice bunt. Tittle then made a strong play from her shortstop position to rob Crumpton of a potential base hit on a looper down the left field line, and Bailey Nelson robbed Thompson of a base hit on a liner into left to end the threat.
Â
The Chargers also had a pair of runners on in the top of the ninth but were unable to score prior to Tittle's walk-off homer.
Â
UNA outhit the Chargers 5-4, and
Kaitlyn Bannister had two of UAH's hits in the contest.
