HUNTSVILLE | The ninth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team captured its third Gulf South Conference series of the season, defeating Shorter 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match between the two teams. UAH improves to 13-5 (8-2 GSC) with the victory, while SU slips to 13-5 (6-5 GSC).
Â
Kimblery Jack (5-1) once again went the distance for the Chargers in the circle, tossing her third complete game in as many outings. The junior worked around six hits as she allowed just the one run while striking out one and walking none.
Â
After several fine defensive plays from both teams – including a strong outfield assist from
Brianna Sullivan to nail a would be run scorer at the plate to end the first – kept the game scoreless in the first two frames, the Hawks grabbed an early lead with a run in the third.
Â
The Chargers would knot the contest at 1-1, however, in the fourth when
Michal Robertson stole third and then scored on an errant throw, and UAH then went ahead in the sixth on an
Abby Roberts single to right that pushed Robertson across for her second run of the day.
An RBI groundout from
Victoria Crumpton later in the frame gave UAH a two-run cushion at 3-1 before Jack wrapped things up in the top of the seventh.
Â
Shorter outhit UAH 6-5 for the contest, and Robertson and Roberts had four of UHA's in the game as they both recorded a pair.
Â
The Chargers will return to action on Tuesday when the team steps outside of conference play to welcome Kentucky Wesleyan to the Rocket City. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. at Charger Park.
