HUNTSVILLE | In a doubleheader that concluded just before 11 p.m. due to rain, the 11th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split with visiting Union, winning 5-0 in the opener before dropping a 1-0 decision in the nightcap. The Chargers move to 33-10 (20-7 Gulf South Conference), and Union goes to 26-16 (14-14 GSC).
Â
The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with the rubber match slated for a noon start. Prior to the game, UAH will recognize its three seniors with an on-field ceremony.
Â
In the evening's first game, the Chargers stole 10 bases en route to the 5-0 win, needing just five hits to produce the five runs, and the stolen base mark was just one off of the program record of 11 that was set against Albany State in 2004.
Â
Victoria Frith swiped three bags in the game, while
Brianna Sullivan,
Savannah Smith, and
Victoria Crumpton all recorded a pair of steals.
Â
The offensive performance was also more than enough support for
Tyler Harrison who picked up a victory in her fourth straight outing while also tossing her fourth straight complete game, and the shutout marked the third in Harrison's last four appearances.
Â
Harrison turned in a career night, sitting down a personal-high nine via the strikeout while allowing just one walk and six hits.
Â
The scoring for the Chargers started in the third when
Kaitlyn Bannister belted her team-best 12th homer with a solo shot that was a no-doubter off the bat to straightaway center, and she picked up her GSC-leading 56th RBI in the 6th on her fourth sacrifice fly of the season to give her 12 for her career which is just two off of Stephanie Pinto's UAH all-time record of 14.
Â
Between those two plays, Sullivan singled in a run in the fourth and Smith knocked in a run in the fifth before
Haley Thompson scored on a passed ball in the fifth prior to the Bannister sac fly.
Â
Emily Glover tossed a strong game for the Chargers in the night's finale, going the distance while scattering six hits, but it was a run with two outs in the third that would prove to be the difference as UAH left six runners stranded after outhitting the Bulldogs by a 7-6 margin.
Â
Abby Roberts joined Bannister in leading the UAH offensive effort in the game as both recorded a pair of hits.
