LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The 10th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville split its Saturday doubleheader at West Alabama on Saturday, winning 10-6 before falling 4-3. UAH is now 36-12 (22-8 Gulf South Conference), while UWA is 19-25 (11-20 GSC).
Â
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Â
The Chargers jumped out to a significant advantage in the first game, scoring twice in the first, four times in the second, and twice again in the fourth to build up an 8-0 lead, but the hosts rattled off six runs of their own in the next three innings to make it an 8-6 contest heading into the seventh.
Â
Victoria Frith and
Abby Roberts then drove in runs for UAH in the top of the last to push the Chargers back ahead comfortably at 10-6 before
Taylor Doriety retired the side in order to end the game in the bottom half.
Â
Doriety pitched three innings of relief of starter
Tyler Harrison, working around three hits and striking out a pair. Harrison saw her string of complete games come to an end, surrendering five runs on six hits in four innings, but she earned the win, moving her staff-best record to 14-3.
Â
UWA outhit UAH by a 9-7 clip, but the Chargers did draw a season-high nine walks in the game. Roberts drove in a pair of runs, while
Kaitlyn Bannister,
Victoria Crumpton, and
Haley Thompson each scored twice.
Â
Roberts opened the scoring in the second game, belting a solo shot for her third home run of the season to lead off the second inning, but UWA would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and another in the third to go in front 3-1.
Â
Pulling the visitors back within one in the fifth, Frith led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a Thompson sacrifice bunt, and stole third to allow her to score on a groundout off the bat of
Brianna Sullivan to make it 3-2.
Â
UWA again had a response, scoring in the fifth, and though Harrison would double in a run in the sixth, West Alabama would hang on for the win.
Â
In the nightcap, hits were even at 7-7, and Sullivan and Crumpton both had a pair to lead the Chargers.
Â
One of Sullivan's hit was a triple to give the junior her first of the season.
