HUNTSVILLE | The No. 4 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team lost the opener to Valdosta State by a final score of 12-10 on Friday afternoon at Charger Park, while game two of the doubleheader has been suspended with UAH ahead 13-8 heading into the top of the seventh due to inclement weather in the region.
UAH has slipped to 25-5-1 (14-5-1 GSC), while VSU improved to 20-12 (12-8).
Valdosta State took the first lead of the game with a two-run homer by Michael Gouge in the top of the third inning, which was extended to 6-0 with a four-run rally in the top of the fourth.
Senior
Colton Simbeck got the Chargers on the board in the fifth with his 11th homer of the season – a solo shot – to left field to cut VSU's lead to 6-1. The Blazers' Ryan Smith regained the run on a solo homer, which UAH followed up with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI double by
AJ Walden to make it 7-3 Valdosta State.
The high-potent Valdosta State offense added three more runs in the seventh to take a 9-3 advantage. UAH pulled within four runs after RBI by
Cody Burton and
Ben Hall in the bottom of the seventh, which Valdosta State responded with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Chargers pulled within two runs in the bottom of the ninth after a sac fly by Brock and a grand slam by reigning Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week Walden to cut the lead to 12-10. However, Valdosta State went on to win the opening matchup by the 12-10 final.
Senior
Daniel Koger was tagged with his first loss of the season to drop his record to 7-1. The southpaw tossed 4.0 innings with six earned runs, three strikeouts and zero walks.
UAH and VSU will pick up in the seventh inning tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Charger Park, followed by the series finale after the resumed game is final.
