UAH Topples Valdosta State to Stay Alive in GSC Tournament

VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team stayed alive at the 2015 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships on Friday afternoon, defeating host Valdosta State 6-3 in an unexpected elimination contest between the top two seeds. UAH improves to 38-13, while VSU slips to 47-7.

The Chargers will take on Delta State in the team's second elimination game of the day at 4:30 p.m. CDT. The Lady Statesmen advanced with a 1-0 win in eight innings over Union. When the two teams met earlier this year in Huntsville, UAH swept the series, winning by scores of 1-0, 5-3, and 9-1.

Tyler Harrison was strong for UAH in the circle in the victory, retiring 13 straight to end the game to help UAH beat the nation's top ranked team for the third time in four meetings this season while also giving the Chargers their fourth straight win against VSU in Valdosta.

The All-GSC pitcher won for the 15th time this season, allowing the strong Blazer offense just four hits while surrendering the three runs, and Harrison went the distance to toss her 12th complete game of the year.

After falling behind 3-2 in the top of the third off home runs from sisters Jaime Phillips and Jennifer Phillips, the Chargers immediately answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Just as the team's come-from-behind win against the Blazers back on April 4 was sparked, it was again a squeeze play that started the UAH rally as Abby Roberts put down a perfect bunt to score Brianna Sullivan while tying the game at 3-3, and Savannah Smith then hit what was eventually the game-winning double to plate Roberts and put the Chargers ahead 4-3.

After a scoreless fourth, back-to-back doubles in the fifth from Roberts and Harrison put the Chargers in control at 6-3 and knocked GSC Pitcher of the Year Caitlyn Calhoun out of the game before Harrison cruised along in the circle en route to the win. The Chargers outhit Valdosta State 8-4 in the game with seven of UAH's nine spots in the lineup recording a hit, and Smith led the way with a pair to raise her batting average to just off her season high at .324.

Victoria Crumpton gave UAH its first lead of the game, recording a two-run double in the second inning to give the freshman her second two-bagger of the season.
