LAKELAND, Fla. | In the first of a two-game road trip to the Sunshine State, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to host Florida Southern on Friday evening. The Chargers slip to 1-2 on the year, while the Mocs improve to 1-2.
Â
The Chargers jumped out in front quickly, going ahead 1-0 on a Florida Southern own goal as a
Leo De Smedt free kick was redirected past the home side's keeper in just the fifth minute of the contest.
Â
That score sparked UAH into applying great pressure over the next several minutes, earning four corners by the 13th minute, and the team built up a 5-2 advantage in shots before FSC was able to tally the equalizer just before halftime in the 43rd minute as Jimmy Oatman scored to make it 1-1.
Â
Controlling play in the second half was Florida Southern, outshooting UAH 13-3 in the period to hold a 17-8 advantage for the game, and the Mocs went in front when the game-winner was scored by Jordyn Henderson in the 65th.
Â
The Mocs also earned six corners in the second 45 minutes compared to just one for the Chargers to end the contest with a 7-6 advantage.
Â
Michael Winstone recorded seven saves in goal for the visitors in the setback, and
Hermann Bjornsson paced the team with a pair of shots.
Â
UAH will conclude its Central Florida weekend on Sunday when the squad visits Rollins. Kick-off is slated for 12:30 p.m. CDT.
