HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team continued its best start since the 1990 season with two more wins on Saturday with a pair of four-set victories over Mount Oliva and Georgia College in the final day of the Francis Marion Tournament. UAH is now 9-0 in the 2015 season.
UAH 3, UMO 1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21)The Chargers began the day with a dominating win in the opening set of the match against Mount Olive, capturing the frame on a 25-14 advantage thanks a team .364 swing rate. However, the Blue & White would fall in the second set, 25-22, before catapulting ahead 2-1 on a 25-16 win in the third set.
Reigning GSC Freshman of the Week
Anna LeDuc starred on offense in the third stanza with seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage, while
Kirsten Giles and
Haley Hop paced the defense with six digs apiece.
UAH was able to complete the four-set win on a 25-21 final in the fourth and final set. Overall in the match, LeDuc led the squad with 13 kills on a .400 hitting percentage followed by
Rachel Brugman with eight successful swings with a .500 swing rate. LeDuc also added 10 digs for a double-double, joining Giles (14) and Hop (18) with double-digit scoops.
UAH 3, GC 1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-13)The Blue & White dropped the opening frame to Georgia College, 25-17, before evening the match 1-1 with a 25-18 victory in the second set. The stanza was tightly contested with the score tied 17-17, but the Chargers stampeded ahead on a 7-0 run en route to the set victory.
The Chargers would again win in the third set on a 25-18 score, with Giles keying the offense with six kills on a perfect hitting percentage, eight assists and two digs.
UAH dominated to a 25-13 win in the fourth frame to seal the four-set win and secure the undefeated record through two weekends of play. The Chargers held a lead through the majority of the set, but a seven-point run with the Blue & White ahead 13-6 clinched the match win.
Sophomore
Anna Claire Johnson led the offense in the second match with 14 kills, while Hop posted a season-best 28 digs in the contest. A total of five Chargers reached double-digit kills, with six players totaling eight or more kills.
UAH looks ahead to three matches in the coming week, beginning on Tuesday at West Georgia at 6 p.m. to kick off GSC play. The Chargers will then return home with matches on Friday at 7 p.m. against Lee and then on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Shorter.
