CARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville routed West Georgia to begin Gulf South Conference play on Tuesday evening in three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-21. The Chargers improve to 10-0, 1-0 GSC, while the Wolves dip to 3-2, 0-1 GSC.
UAH trailed through much of the opening set, falling behind by as many as five points at 20-15, but a 6-0 run at that point put the Chargers up at 21-20 as the squad finished the set on a 10-2 run to take the opener.
Anna Claire Johnson had a team-best four kills in the frame – including a successful attack on the set's deciding point.
The Chargers took the second set by a score of 25-21 to extend the lead to 2-0, led by Johnson and
Kendall Knisley who shared the team lead with four kills in the frame, with
Kirsten Giles assisting 13 successful swings.
The third set was tightly contested to the end of the match, until the Blue and White capitalized on a 4-0 run to cap off the 25-21 win to seal the three-set victory. Johnson again led the UAH offense with seven of her 15 kills on the night. She finished with a .310 hitting percentage.
GSC Defensive Player of the Week
Haley Hop finished with a team-best 15 digs, while Giles completed the win with a game-high 32 assists.
The Chargers now will return home to Spragins Hall as the team welcomes a pair of GSC opponents this weekend. Lee will visit for a Friday night contest at 7 before Shorter travels to Huntsville on Saturday at 2 p.m.
