PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | Behind a strong opening 45 minutes, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team knocked off visiting Newberry 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park. The Chargers improve to 2-1-1 with the victory, and the Wolves fall to 0-2-2.
Â
Each of UAH's goals came in a span of just over 20 minutes in the first half starting with a beauty of a strike off the foot of
Riley Ridgeway on a free kick from around 30 yards out in the 16th minute, and that goal was followed by a pair in rapid succession a quarter of an hour later. Sophomore
Alexcia Alexander fired a shot off the post in the 32nd minute of the contest, following up on her own attempt with a successful try on the rebound to produce her team-best third goal of the season, and then in the 37th, the reigning GSC Freshman of the Year assisted on eventual game-winner, connecting with
Sydney Pfankuch who buried it to create the 3-0 advantage.
Â
For the opening half, UAH held a 9-4 edge in shots.
Â
Running her streak without allowing a score to 277 minutes, UAH keeper
Larae Breaux held Newberry at bay until the 69th minute, capping off a strong stretch that also featured 18 saves including the five that she made in Saturday's contest.
Â
It was Guadalupe Magana who scored off a corner to make it 3-1, and the Wolves pulled to within one in the 80th minute on a Michelle Calmeyn score. However, the Chargers would not allow another shot in the game's final minutes en route to wrapping up the victory.
Â
The Wolves ended up holding the advantage for the match in shots by a 13-12 edge, but the home side earned five corners compared to two for Newberry to lead in that statistical category.
Â
UAH will take off Sunday and then entertain Oakwood on Monday night at Charger Park. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
