FLORENCE, Ala. | Rival North Alabama used a second-half surge on Thursday night to push past the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team by a 6-1 score in the conference opener for both teams. UAH falls to 3-2-1 (0-1-0 GSC) with the setback, while the 14th-ranked Lions improve to 4-0-1 (1-0-0 GSC).
The Chargers jumped out in front early, scoring in the 14th minute when
Sydney Pfankuch put
Alexcia Alexander alone in front of the keeper, and Alexander pushed it to the bottom right corner of the goal for her team-best seventh goal of the season while giving Pfankuch her fourth assist.
That 1-0 advantage for the visiting side would be maintained until the 52nd minute when the Lions started a stretch that saw the team score five times over the next 10 minutes to go in front 5-1, and the scoring concluded for UNA in the 75th when Chloe Richards scored her second of the contest to produce the 6-1 final.
North Alabama held a wide 28-4 advantage in shots for the contest after limiting the Chargers to just one shot in the second half.
That shot, however, nearly changed the complexion of the contest as Alexander was again was free in front of the UNA goal after the hosts had gone up 2-1, but the scoring threat ended as her header attempt went wide.
Of UNA's 28 shots, 20 of them were on goal as UAH keeper
Larae Breaux matched a career high with 14 saves.
UAH will look to bounce back when the Chargers continue GSC action at home on Sunday as West Alabama visits the Rocket City. Kick-off at Charger Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.
