UAH Posts Third Straight Clean Sheet with 2-0 Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. | Moving to 2-0 in Gulf South Conference action, The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team capped off a perfect road trip with a 2-0 win over Delta State on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 4-3 overall on the season, while the Statesmen fall to 2-5 (1-2 GSC).

The win marks the third consecutive shutout for the Chargers as UAH keeper Michael Winstone registered three saves in the contest, and the senior along with the strong UAH backline have now not allowed in goal in 279 minutes.

With that defensive performance that allowed Delta State just one first-half shot, a pair of goals just over four minutes apart early in the game would be all that UAH would need to earn the victory.

The scoring started in the 14th minute when Leo De Smedt earned his second assist of the season, setting up Hermann Bjornsson's header that proved to be the game-winner while moving Bjornsson to second on the team with nine points on the strength of four goals and an assist.

Bjornsson is second to Jordan Wright who gave the Chargers their other goal in the 18th, providing the newcomer with his eighth of the season.

Wright finished the contest with three shots while Alex Martinez had a team-high four, and UAH held a 10-5 lead in shots for the game. The visitors also held a 5-3 margin in corners earned.

The match was a physical affair as 31 totals fouls were called, and the referee went to the book eight times including an 87th-minute sending off of a Delta State player.

The Chargers will look to continue their winning ways next weekend as the team returns home for the first installment of Friday Night Football at Charger Park this year. Nationally-ranked Christian Brothers will travel to the Rocket City with kick-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
