Season Opener Results in 3-1 Setback to Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team traveled to Carson-Newman to open the 2015 campaign on Saturday, falling 3-1 to the host Eagles to start the year at 0-1. C-N opens up at 1-0.

It was Carson-Newman who struck first as Polyminos Avgousti scored in just the fourth minute of the contest, and the hosts took a two-goal advantage into the locker room at the half as Thibault Mathorez made it 2-0 in the 34th minute of the contest.

That score held until the 63rd when junior Leo De Smedt tallied for the Chargers, giving the Lille, France, his fourth career goal, but UAH could not find the equalizer and eventually C-N iced the contest as Lucas Siqueira scored in the final minute of the game to create the 3-1 final.

Senior keeper Michael Winstone recorded a pair of saves in the game as the home side outshot UAH by a 13-9 clip while holding a 5-3 edge in shots that were on target in addition to an 8-4 edge in corners.

The teams were whistled for a combined 26 fouls and three cautions were issued in the contest.

UAH will now return to Huntsville for its home opener on Monday as Oakwood visits Charger Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
