JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team opened the 2015 campaign on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 decision on the road at Carson-Newman. C-N improved to 2-0 on the year, while UAH starts off at 0-1.
Â
The host Eagles controlled play for much of the contest, outshooting UAH 26-6 – including a 14-4 edge in shots that were on frame – while also earning eight corners to UAH's one.
Â
UAH sophomore keeper
Larae Breaux kept the Chargers in the game, especially in the first half as she recorded eight of her 11 saves in the first 45 minutes to give her double figures in saves for the fifth time in her career, but two goals in the final 15 minutes of the stanza – a 31st-minute score by Megan Peterson and a Gabrielle Gianeselli strike in the 42nd – gave C-N a 2-0 lead at the break.
Â
The score remained that way until the 65th minute when UAH would cut its deficit in half when the team was awarded a penalty kick, and senior
Sydnie Fiocca stepped up to the spot and buried it for her 16th career goal.
Â
Unfortunately, the Eagles would hold the Chargers at bay the rest of the contest while also picking up an insurance tally when Nikki Williams scored in the 82nd minute to produce the 3-1 final.
Â
UAH will now turn its attention to the squad's home opener as Charger Park will open its gates for the first time in 2015 on Monday when Belmont Abbey visits. Kick-off in the Rocket City is slated for 1 p.m.
