PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team played to a draw on Monday afternoon as UAH and visiting Belmont Abbey played to a scoreless tie. UAH moves to 0-1-1 on the year, while the Crusaders go to 1-1-1.
Â
The most exciting moments of the contest came in the second stanza of extra time when UAH's
Jillian Young fired off an attempt from long-range that floated in and clanked off the crossbar, resulting in two more quality attempts immediately thereafter as
Sydnie Fiocca and
Isabel Shanteau both had strong tries.
Â
The Crusaders then counted with Laura Shelton getting alone in front of
Larae Breaux, firing a shot that the UAH keeper stopped to record her 10th save of the contest to ultimately preserve the draw.
Â
Belmont Abbey controlled much of the flow of the game, but the Chargers were up to the task defensively as the 23-9 margin in shots was somewhat misleading as only a handful of the attempts were truly threatening.
Â
Corner kick attempts were more even at a 7-5 edge for the Crusaders, and two of UAH's corners came in the final minute of the first half as the home side applied great pressure in the closing moments of the period.
Â
UAH will continue play at home on Wednesday evening as in-state foe Montevallo visits the Rocket City. Kick-off at Charger Park is slated for 5 p.m.
