The Chargers start the week at 9-6 (6-5 GSC), and the squad is 6-4 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall this year.
Â
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Chargers had a strong week, moving above .500 in conference play with a home 75-65 win over Christian Brothers and a win on the road at rival North Alabama by a 63-55 score.
Dina Saunders was especially strong in the two games, earning GSC Player of the Week honors after averaging 22 points.
Â
AROUND THE GSC: Ahead of the Chargers – who are alone in sixth place – is still quite the logjam as Union, Delta State and Lee are all tied for first with 9-2 records, while Shorter and West Florida are right behind at 8-3. Seventh place is held down by Valdosta State at 5-6, and UAH is two games ahead of eighth-place Christian Brothers who owns a 4-7 mark.
Â
LEADERS AT THE TURN: At the halfway point of conference play,
Dina Saunders is leading the Chargers in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game, and she is joined in double figures by
Halle Jarnagin who is scoring 10.5 per contest while also owning a team-best rebounding average of 7.1 to go along with a team-leading 3.0 assists per contest.
Â
TWIN ATTACK: Both Dina and
Josi Saunders have been playing well in the team's last five games as the twin duo lead the team in scoring during that stretch. Both are shooting over 50 percent from the floor with Dina scoring 17.6 points per contest and Josi averaging 13.2 points per game, and they have two of the team's top three rebounding marks in the period with Dina's 6.8 rebounds leading the way while Josi is averaging 5.8 per contest.
Â
ABOUT VALDOSTA STATE: VSU will visit Huntsville on Thursday as the owner of a 9-7 overall record to go along with a 5-6 mark in GSC play, but the team has won three straight after defeating West Florida last weekend. Madi Mitchell is the team's lone scorer in double figures at 10.5 points per game, but the team is strong defensively, holding teams to a scoring average of 57.3.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Blazers lead the all-time series 34-13 after defeating UAH in Valdosta earlier this season by a 62-53 score.
Josi Saunders scored 18 and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Chargers in the setback.
Â
ABOUT WEST FLORIDA: The Argos enter the week with a 10-5 overall mark and an 8-3 record in conference play ahead of their contest at UNA on Thursday, and the team had won seven straight prior to falling at Valdosta State on Saturday. Katie Bobos leads the team with 13.2 points per contest and is second on the squad with 7.7 boards per game.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: UWF holds a slim 27-25 advantage in the all-time series after UAH pulled a game closer with a strong 65-58 win in Pensacola on Dec. 2. In that contest, four Chargers scored in double figures with
Dina Saunders and
Chandler Elder leading the way as both scored 14.
Halle Jarnagin recorded a double-double in the victory, scoring 11 and grabbing 13 rebounds.
