UAH Knocks Off UWA on Regular Season's Last Day

LIVINGSTON, Ala. | Corentin Diverres scored twice, sending The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team into the postseason on a high note as the Chargers defeated defending GSC champion West Alabama 2-0 on the road in the regular season finale Friday night. UAH improves to 6-9-1 (4-4-1 Gulf South Conference), while UWA slips to 9-6-1 (5-3-1 GSC).

Turning Points
-With the Chargers clinging to a 1-0 lead, Diverres provided the visiting side with some breathing room in the 77th minute when his header off of Hermann Bjornsson's corner kick found the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game.
-Just over 10 minutes later in the 87th, the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick, but UWA's attempt to cut its deficit in half was thwarted when Gabriel Chilas deflected the shot to the right post where it caromed harmlessly away.

Inside the Box Score
-Diverres started the scoring early as he tallied just 67 seconds into the contest off a ball from Daniel Buchanan, and the score remained that way through the rest of the first 45 minutes.
-Chillas stopped six shots on the night while earning the shutout in goal for the Chargers.
-For the game, UAH outshot the Tigers by a 14-9 margin including an 11-6 margin in shots that were on target.
-Bjornsson led the team once again in shots as he fired off six, and four of those attempts were on frame.
-West Alabama earned nine corners to UAH's four, and the Tigers were whistled for being offside four times.

Noteworthy
-The win is UAH's first-ever against the in-state rival, and the two-goal difference Friday night is the largest in the series since UWA was a 2-0 winner in the GSC tournament semifinals in 2013.
-The performance for Diverres is his first career multi-goal showing, and it gives him four goals on the season including three in the team's past two games.
-Buchanan's assist on the first goal extends his hold on the top spot on the UAH in helpers as he now has seven on the season.
-Bjornsson now has five assists on the year, and with his goal total of nine, the senior leads the Chargers with 23 points.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will now turn their attention to the postseason as UAH makes its fourth straight appearance in the GSC tournament on Tuesday in Pensacola, Florida. UAH owns the No. 6 seed in the tournament, while Super Tuesday host West Florida is the No. 3 seed. The winner advances to the semifinals at top-seeded Mississippi College next weekend.
