MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's lacrosse team opened its inaugural season with a 17-7 victory at Montevallo on Wednesday afternoon. UAH is now 1-0 on the year, while UM dips to 1-1.
"We've been working really hard to get to this point, and I couldn't be more proud of our team and coaching staff for their effort in this inaugural win," Head coach
Gail Wallach said. "Looking forward to getting back to work and continuing to improve this season."
Nicole Federovitch excelled on offense for the Blue and White, amassing seven goals in the contest with a total of five coming in the opening half.
Elizabeth Brown paced the defense with four ground balls, while also adding two tallies.
The Chargers opened up the scoring on Wednesday afternoon as the lone senior on the squad,
Megan Hart, netted the first goal of the game with 27:18 remaining in the first period, before Montevallo's Maddie Ellis evened the contest at 1-1 at 23:01.
UAH's
Elizabeth Brown and Federovitch gave the Chargers a two-goal advantage with markers at 22:30 and 20:13, respectively, but UM pulled within one with a goal by Jessica Culliver with 17:17 remaining.
The Blue and White would then string together nine consecutive goals over the final 15 minutes of the opening half, highlighted by four goals for Federovitch and two tallies for
Natalie Pachinger. Montevallo was able to score a late goal in the first half to bring the score to 12-3 through 30 minutes.
Montevallo experienced a little more success in the second half with four goals in the latter 30 minutes, but the Chargers still held the edge with five second-half markers to give the game its 17-7 final. Federovitch led the offense again in the final 30 minutes with a team-high two goals in the final half.
Haleigh Comp started for the Chargers in net in the second half, compiling six total saves in 60 minutes of work. Her record improves to 1-0 on the year with her first career victory.
UAH continues its four-game road swing next weekend with non-conference matchups at Rockhurst on Feb. 20 and Lindenwood-Belleville on Feb. 21.
