UAH opened up the scoring on Friday night as freshman
Madison Dunn sent in a rebound off a shot by
Brennan Saulnier on a power play in the first period at 9:22 for his first career goal. Fellow freshman
Adam Wilcox and Saulnier had assists on the tally.
However, Minnesota State's Bryce Gervais would even the score at 1-1 at 12:25 of the opening period, which would stand after 20 minutes of play.
Quickly into the second period, UAH junior captain
Brent Fletcher gave the Chargers a 2-1 advantage with a shorthanded, unassisted marker – his second goal of the season – 22 seconds into the frame after forcing a turnover at center ice.
The Mavericks would again bounce back with a power-play tally by Zach Stepan at 1:48 of the second stanza.
A rare own-goal with a delayed penalty, which would be credited to Dunn for his first career multi-goal performance, at 10:16 allowed the Chargers to take a 3-2 lead heading into second intermission.
The UAH advantage would stand through the midway point of the third period, but Gervais scored for the second time at 13:50 of the frame to knot the score at 3-3.
Both squads went scoreless in overtime to bring the game to its 3-3 final, with UAH netminder
Matt Larose amassing seven saves in the five-minute period. Larose's record now stands at 4-5-2 on the year, after posting 34 total stops in the contest.
The Chargers accumulated a total of 18 shots on goal in the tie on Friday, as freshman
Tyler Poulsen led the way with three shots on target. Freshman
Cam Knight paced the defensive effort with a game-high five blocks.
UAH and Minnesota State will return to the VBC ice on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. for the series finale.
