MARQUETTE, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team lost to Northern Michigan in the WCHA series finale on Saturday night at the Berry Events Center by a final score of 3-1. The Chargers slip to 6-19-5 (4-15-5 WCHA), while Northern Michigan improves to 15-11-6 (12-8-4 WCHA).
UAH jumped on the board first on Saturday as junior captain
Brent Fletcher gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead at 9:41 of the first period with his third goal of the season.
Brandon Parker and
Matt Salhany were credited with assists on the score.
However, Northern Michigan evened the game at 1-1 – which would stand as the score through 20 minutes – at 15:09 of the opening period with a marker from Cohen Adair.
The Wildcats would take a 2-1 lead early into the second period with a power-play tally by Daren Nowick 55 seconds into the frame, before the hosts took a two-goal lead with a marker by Robbie Payne at 14:01 of the middle period.
Both squads went scoreless in the final 20 minutes of play to bring the game to its 3-1 final.
Junior
Carmine Guerriero's record fell to 2-13-2 on the year, despite making 32 saves in the contest including double-digit saves in the second (13) and third (10) period.
Parker paced the offense with three shots on goal in the matchup, with Fletcher and Salhany following with two shots saved apiece.
The Chargers will be on the road again next weekend with a trip to rival Bemidji State for games on Friday and Saturday. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m. on both nights.
