BEMIDJI, Minn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team tied Bemidji State in the opening game of a two-game WCHA series on Friday night at the Sanford Center by a final score of 1-1. UAH moves to 6-19-6 (4-15-6 WCHA), while BSU sits at 14-14-6 (9-11-5 WCHA).
Both sides went scoreless in the opening period, as UAH goaltender
Matt Larose made 11 saves in the first with the Chargers posting five shots on net in the initial 20 minutes.
Over 17 minutes would pass in the ensuing frame until freshman
Madison Dunn netted his third goal of the season on the power play at 17:39 of the second period to give UAH a 1-0 advantage. Fellow freshmen
Jetlan Houcher and
Tyler Poulsen were credited with assists on the score.
UAH remained in front through the second intermission, but a tally by Cory Ward at 7:34 of the third period allowed the hosts to tie the game at 1-1.
The Chargers and Beavers then went through a scoreless overtime period, despite a missed opportunity on a penalty shot awarded to
Matt Salhany at 3:11 of the frame. The contest went on to its final of a 1-1 tie as Larose notched three saves in overtime, with counterpart Michael Bitzer totaling two of his 21 saves in the final stanza.
Larose's record on the season now sits at 4-6-4, after recording a game-high 36 saves in the contest. He has totaled eight games of 30-plus saves this season.
UAH and Bemidji State will wrap up the rivalry series on Saturday at 7 p.m., which will be the final regular season road game for the Chargers.
