HUNTSVILLE | The No. 18 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up its second straight conference series sweep and pushed its winning streak to 13 games on Sunday, coming from behind to defeat visiting Lee 8-5 at Charger Park. UAH improves to 16-2 (6-0 Gulf South Conference), while Lee slips to 9-7 (2-4 GSC).
Â
With the team trailing 3-2 in the fourth inning, junior
Sarah Jordan hit her first career home run over the fence in left to tie the game, and she then kept runs off the board in the top of the fifth when she fully extended to make a diving catch on a shallow fly ball to left to strand Lee runners at second and third.
Â
That fantastic defensive play then permitted the Chargers to take the lead in the home half of the inning as
Abby Roberts again pulled through with a clutch hit with the bases loaded, roping a double to the gap in left-center to plate three and put UAH ahead 6-3.
Â
A groundout from
Taylor Wascavage gave UAH another run in the inning, and
Tyler Harrison picked up an RBI single in the sixth before Lee crossed the plate twice in the seventh to produce the 8-5 final.
Â
Harrison moved to 9-2 on the season in the circle as she earned the victory after throwing three innings of relief.
Â
UAH totaled eight hits to Lee's 13 in the game, and it was
Savannah Smith who logged the only multi-hit performance for the Chargers as she hit safely twice, drew a walk in another pair of plate appearances, and scored twice.
Â
Haley Thompson also was patient at the dish, drawing three free passes on the afternoon while also scoring once.
Â
The Chargers will return to action with their first mid-week doubleheader of the year, welcoming Miles to the Rocket City on Wednesday, and the twinbilling is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
