PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | If the objective of college basketball games in March is to survive and advance, then the top-seeded University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team did just that Tuesday night, coming from behind to win 86-82 over eighth-seeded Shorter to move on in the 2016 VisitSpaceCoast.com GSC Men's Basketball Championships quarterfinals held at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
Â
UAH (22-6) will face No. 5 seed Delta State on Friday at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University at 7:30 p.m. The Chargers trailed by seven with 3:45 remaining in the contest, but spurned on by a raucous crowd, the hosts picked the best time of the night to go on their most impressive run, taking the lead on a terrific assist from
Greg Gardner to
Seab Webster who slammed it down to give the Chargers an 80-79 advantage to put the team up for the first time since just under six minutes into the contest.
Â
The Webster dunk was part of a 10-0 run for UAH that was keyed by four points from both Webster and
Brandon Roberts, and it was Roberts who had an immediate answer after Shorter's Phil Taylor completed an old-fashioned 3-point play at the other end to knot the contest at 82-82 with just a minute left.
Â
Roberts' bucket put UAH ahead 84-82, and then after a defensive stop saw Shorter turn the ball over,
Troy Saxton was true on both free throw attempts to create the 86-82 final.
Â
UAH's two all-conference players Webster and Gardner paced the team in the victory as both scored 21 points.
Â
Webster added a team-best 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, while Gardner dished out seven assists while making UAH's only two 3-pointers on the night, including one as part of a key 9-0 run in which he scored all the points to pull UAH to within three with 4:36 left in the game.
Â
Saxton added 13, and Roberts chipped in with 12 while also collecting three steals.
Â
Shorter – who led 47-37 at the half – was led by Trevor McDade who scored 22. The Hawks led for more than 35 minutes in the contest, and the team's largest lead of the night was a 12-point advantage at 75-64 with 5:37 left in the contest.
Â
UAH then proceeded to go on a 23-7 run that allowed the squad to advance.
Â
On the night, Shorter shot 52.5 percent while the Chargers connected on 49.1 percent of their attempts, and the Hawks were able to maintain the lead thanks in part to a defensive effort that limited UAH to just two 3-pointers in the contest.
Â
Rebounds were even at 32-32.
