UAH's Season Comes to a Close in GSC Quarterfinals

ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Tuesday night, falling 72-59 in the GSC Women's Basketball Championships quarterfinals at Shorter. UAH closes the year at 15-12, while SU moves on at 20-17.
 
Dina Saunders in her final game as a Charger scored 15 while also grabbing a team-best seven rebounds, and she was matched by freshman Baylee Johnson who also scored 15.
 
Chandler Elder scored 13 to round out UAH's double-figures contingent.
 
UAH led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, but Shorter's second-quarter performance is what turned the game around as the Hawks outscored the Chargers 20-12 to go up 30-25 at the halftime break.
 
A 7-2 run to start the third quarter by UAH tied the contest at 32-32, but the hosts then outscored the Chargers by a 23-13 clip to grab a 55-45 lead with three periods complete and then proceeded to lead by double figures the rest of the way.
 
For the contest, the Hawks – who were paced by Shakierya McClendon's 23-point performance – shot 49.0 percent, while the Chargers connected on 44.7 percent of their shots.
 
Shorter won the battle on the glass by a 32-24 margin.
 
UAH turned the ball over 23 times in the contest, but the visitors also forced Shorter to commit 19 miscues and ended up holding a 19-17 advantage in points off turnovers. In the paint, the Hawks enjoyed a 36-28 margin.
 
Joining Dina Saunders in wrapping up their UAH careers were Josi Saunders, Halle Jaranagin and Sara Jarnagin. The quartet was part of Charger history during their four-year careers as UAH won the GSC tournament and the program's first-ever NCAA tournament game during the group's tenure.
