Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Memorable Season Concludes with Regional Final Setback

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team saw its magical season come to a close Tuesday night as Barry defeated UAH 87-83 in the championship game of the NCAA Division II South Regional at a near-capacity Spragins Hall. UAH ends the campaign at 25-8, while Barry advances to the Elite Eight with a 26-6 mark.

The setback concludes UAH's run to its fourth regional final in the past six seasons, and during that span, the program has racked up a stunning 146-45 record including 98 wins from the senior class of Greg Gardner, Preston Herring, and Spencer Palmer.

Four Chargers scored in double figures on the night with Seab Webster's 21-point showing leading the way, while Brandon Roberts added 19.

Gardner concluded his career in the Blue and White with a double-double performance of 18 points and 10 rebounds, and he dished out seven assists to solidify his spot at second all-time in UAH history with 634 during his four-year tenure.

Herring rounded out the quartet with 10 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and adding two blocks.

Both Webster and Gardner earned spots on the all-tournament team for their efforts during the regional, while Barry was represented by the event's Most Outstanding Player Yunio Barrueta and Elvar Fridiksson who both scored 21 for the Bucs in Tuesday's contest.

The Chargers played a terrific opening 20 minutes on this night, and the team used a 9-1 run over the final 2:30 of the first half to build up a 48-40 advantage at the end of the high-scoring period.

UAH's lead then ballooned to as many as 12 points just under three minutes into the second half, but the Buccaneers would score 20 straight points over a span of just under seven minutes to go up 67-58 by the midway point of the stanza.

Not surprisingly, the resiliency that the Chargers displayed all season appeared once again as the team controlled the next six minutes, outscoring the Bucs 15-3 to go back in front 73-70 by the last media timeout of the game.

The visitors, however, would hit back-to-back 3-pointers after a Roberts triple at the 2:42 mark to give them a lead they would not relinquish.
