CLEVELAND, Miss. | The third-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team bounced back from Saturday's setbacks with a big win on Sunday, knocking off Delta State 7-0. The Chargers improve to 26-6 (14-4 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while DSU slips to 27-7 (16-2 GSC).
Â
UAH will return to action on Tuesday when the team travels to Stillman for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
Â
The Chargers pounded out 11 hits to the Lady Statesmen's two in the contest, and four players –
Brianna Sullivan, Kailtyn Bannister,
Abby Roberts and
Sarah Jordan – each recorded a pair in the contest.
Â
Setting the tone early, Sullivan doubled to lead off the game and two batters later, Bannister stepped into the box and smashed her team-best ninth home run of the game to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
Â
Bannister added another RBI later in the game to give her 46 on the year.
Â
The first-inning runs would have been enough for
Tyler Harrison who returned to form on Sunday, retiring the first nine batters she faced en route to moving to 16-3 on the season while picking up her sixth shutout and 14th complete game. The junior struck out three and walked just one.
Â
UAH would put together a three-run fourth to take complete command of the game, sending nine batters to the plate and picking up run-producing hits from Sullivan and Bannister while another run crossed the plate when
Savannah Smith reached on an error.
Â
Lexi Beach knocked in a run in the fifth, and
Taylor Wascavage drove one in in the seventh to produce the 7-0 final.
