ROME, Ga. | The 10th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a thrilling doubleheader sweep of Shorter on Friday, winning on the road 5-4 in nine innings before using a run in the seventh to secure a 1-0 victory in the nightcap. UAH improves to 30-6 (16-4 Gulf South Conference), while Shorter slips to 18-12 (12-8 GSC).
Â
With the Friday sweep, the Chargers have now won six of the seven GSC series thus far this campaign.
Â
The two teams will conclude the weekend on Saturday with a single game that is to start at 11 a.m. CDT.
Â
UAH 5, Shorter 4 (9 inn.)Â
With the game tied at 4-4 after a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the fifth allowed the Hawks to deadlock the affair and with
Brianna Sullivan standing at third after reaching on an error, stealing second, and moving up one station on a productive
Abby Roberts groundout, junior
Bridgette Wilson singled up the middle to plate the senior and ultimately give UAH the 5-4 win.
Â
Tyler Harrison sat the Hawks down in order in the ninth to ensure the victory, and the junior hurler moved to 18-3 on the year with her 16th complete game of the season. Harrison scattered eight hits, allowed just two earned runs, and struck out four in the win.
Â
The Chargers took the lead early in the game with Sullivan scoring on a passed ball and Kailtyn Bannister crossing the plate on a wild pitch in the first inning, and the team manufactured an additional run in the second when
Savannah Smith reached on an error, stole second before also swiping third, and then scored when Sullivan also reached on a Shorter miscue.
Â
After Shorter cut into the deficit with a run in the third, the lead would grow back out to three for the Chargers when
Haley Thompson drove in Smith in the fourth, but the Hawks then scored a run in the fourth and the pair in the fifth to eventually force extra innings.
Â
UAH outhit the Hawks 10-8 in the contest with both Sullivan and Wilson picking up a pair, and both Sullivan and Smith finished the game with three stolen bases apiece.
Â
UAH 1, Shorter 0Â
The lone run and the winning run in the day's second game came with UAH down to its last out in the seventh at which point
Kelly Campbell singled into right-center to score
Sarah Jordan who had hit safely earlier in the inning, and that one run would be all that pitcher
Emily Glover would need.
Â
Glover moved to 5-1 on the season, tossing her third complete game and second shutout as she worked around four hits while walking none and striking out three.
Â
Shorter never advanced past second in the game, and in the inning in which the Hawks threatened the most, Glover induced a double play that ended the home third.
Â
Taylor Wascavage was also strong behind the plate, picking a runner off of second in the fourth and throwing out a would-be base stealer to end the sixth.
Â
UAH again outhit the hosts, collecting five to Shorter's four, and Jordan led the way with a pair.
