HUNTSVILLE | In its highest scoring output since 2008, The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team knocked off Bowling Green by a final score of 7-5 on Friday night at the Von Braun Center in the opening game of the two-game WCHA set. UAH improves to 7-20-6 (5-16-6 WCHA), while BGSU slips to 19-12-6 (15-7-5 WCHA).

The Chargers last scored seven goals in a game against Robert Morris on Feb. 1, 2008, with Friday night's victory the first over Bowling Green in Huntsville since Oct. 14, 2000.

After an early tally by Bowling Green's Kevin Dufour at 1:47 of the opening frame, UAH proceeded to score three unanswered goals to lead 3-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Brent Fletcher led off the UAH scoring with a wrap-around marker that snuck past BGSU netminder Chris Nell at 7:03 of the first, before Regan Soquila notched a redirected goal at 9:53 followed by Hans Gorowsky scoring on a 2-on-1 chance at 14:48.

Bowling Green was able to regain the lead in the second period at 4-3, as the Falcons would notch goals by Tyler Spezia at 1:13, Stephen Baylis at 13:11 and Brandon Hawkins at 18:18.

Undeterred, the Chargers proceeded to post an additional three goals in the third and final period compared to one by the Falcons to take the opener 7-5.

Matt Salhany made it a 4-4 tie at 8:13 of the third after causing a turnover at center ice for his fourth goal of the season. Josh Kestner was then able to score on the power play at 12:27, followed by UAH points leader Max McHugh's seventh of the year at 12:27.

Bowling Green drew within one at 6-5 with a goal by Sean Walker at 15:18 in the final period, before Kestner scored his second of the contest – an empty-netter – at 18:36 to make it a 7-5 final. The Huntsville native now has two multi-goal performances this season.

Matt Larose improved to 5-7-4 in net this season, following a 27-save performance in the victory. Larose helped the Chargers to stopping 4-of-5 power-play opportunities by the Falcons, with the squad killing off a total of three penalties in the third period.

The Chargers put a total of 20 shots on goal on Friday night, led by Brandon Parker and Matt Salhany with three apiece. Parker paced the defensive effort with five blocks.
UAH wraps up the 2015-16 season tomorrow at the VBC with the series finale against Bowling Green. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday.
