UAH Advances with 10-9 Win over Lee

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team topped Lee in an elimination matchup on day two of the 2016 Gulf South Conference tournament by a final score of 10-9 at Jim Spooner Field.

UAH advances to the third day of the GSC tournament on Monday with a matchup at 3 p.m. against the loser of the Delta State/West Georgia game.

The Chargers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as AJ Walden mashed his 14th homer – a two-run shot – after Ben Rhodes led off the game with a double to left.

After a solo homer by Lee's Ben Holland in the bottom of the first, UAH again utilized the long ball in the second inning with Rhodes notching a three-run home run to right to make it a 5-1 lead.

The Blue and White went on to add two more runs in the third inning to lead 7-1 as both Michael Fox and Zach Dugas recorded RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Following the early Lee homer, UAH starting pitcher Will Myers settled down to post zeros in the second, third and fourth inning to keep UAH ahead of the Flames. Myers' string of zeros came to an end in the bottom of the fifth with one Lee run to slim the UAH lead to 7-2.

However, UAH proceeded to rally for three runs – highlighted by RBI singles by Trey Mathis and Fox – in the top of the sixth to take a 10-2 advantage.

Lee's offense picked up in the later innings, as the Flames posted one run in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth to reduce the Chargers lead to the 10-9 final. GSC Freshman of the Year Taylor Clemons tossed the final 1.1 innings of the contest, and was tagged with three runs allowed and three strikeouts.

Myers picked up the victory to improve to 8-5 in the 2016 season, after posting 6.1 innings pitched with three earned runs, three walks and seven strikeouts.

UAH totaled 15 hits in the contest, paced by Ben Rhodes with a 3-for-5 performance with three runs, three RBI and one walk. In total, there were five different Chargers with multi-hit performances.
