Chargers Extinguish Blazers In Thrilling Overtime Victory

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team won its fourth straight game in thrilling fashion, defeating Valdosta State just 21 seconds into overtime of the conference opener to earn a 1-0 victory. The Chargers improve to 4-1-0 (1-0-0 Gulf South Conference) with the triumph, while VSU slips to 0-4-1 (0-1-0 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-After neither team was able to find a goal through the first 90 minutes, UAH wasted no time sending the Charger Park faithful home happy as Melody Hoernschemeyer scored in the 91st minute to give UAH the overtime win as she played a ball from Alexcia Alexander across the front of the goal and in for the score.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Larae Breaux picked up her fourth win of the season in goal for the Chargers as she recorded six saves in posting her third straight shutout.
-Alexander earned her first start of the season after being slowed by an injury to start the year, and she led the Chargers with five shots including two that were on frame.
-Hoernschemeyer matched Alexander with a pair that were on goal.
-The Chargers outshot the Blazers in the contest 14-12, but VSU held a slim 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
-UAH started off the contest strong, logging numerous chances that were fired high or wide in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the visiting side 7-3 in the first half.
-UAH earned four corners on the night, while Valdosta State earned a pair.
 
Noteworthy
-Hoernschemeyer now leads the team in points as she has seven on the strength of two goals and three assists.
-For Hoernschemeyer the game-winning strike is her first since she netted the game-winner against Delta State on Sept. 28, 2014.
-Breaux has now logged 326 minutes without allowing a goal.
-The shutout for Breaux marks her eighth career clean sheet which is just one off of the UAH career record of nine which was set by Sarah Sollie from 2002-05.
-Alexander's assist is her first of the season and moves her point total to five through three games played.
-The overtime victory is the first for UAH in extra time since a 4-3 win over Carson-Newman on the last day of the 2014 regular season.
 
Next Time Out
-UAH will continue conference play at home on Sunday when West Georgia visits at 1 p.m. UWG lost on the road at West Alabama on Friday night, falling to West Alabama by a 2-1 score.
