FLORENCE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team fell on the road on Wednesday night, dropping a tight 2-1 decision to host North Alabama in GSC play. The Chargers slip to 4-3-0 (1-2-0 GSC), while UNA improve to 3-4-0 (2-1-0 GSC) with the win.
Â
Turning Point
-With the game tied at 1-1 in the 71st minute, Shelby Wall scored off of a scrum in the box to put the Lions up by a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Â
Inside the Box Score
-The scoring in the game opened in the first half when Audrey Tanner scored just prior to halftime in the 43rd minute to put the hosts up 1-0.
-
Alexcia Alexander scored UAH's goal, leveling the contest at 1-1 in the 64th minute as she made a nice run down the right side before eventually beating her defender and then putting her shot past the UNA keeper for her third goal of the season.
-The Chargers nearly tied it again just over a minute after the second UNA goal when in the 72nd minute
Sydney Pfankuch was alone in front, but her attempt was pushed wide to preserve the North Alabama advantage.
-North Alabama outshot UAH 25-6 on the evening and held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal, but the discrepancy in strong scoring chances was much more narrow than those totals would indicate.
-
Larae Breaux was terrific once more for the Chargers in goal as she recorded nine saves including a pair of terrific ones in the immediate minutes after Alexander's goal that kept the contest for the time being level.
-A total of 21 fouls were whistled in the contest – including 10 first-half fouls for the visiting side while UNA was just penalized for one infraction in the opening 45 minutes – and there were three cautions issued.
Â
Noteworthy
-Alexander took over the team lead in goals with her third of the season in just her third start, and she is now matched with
Melody Hoernschemeyer at the top of the points ledger as both have seven on the season.
-The 15 fouls whistled on UAH is by far a season-high for the team with the second-highest total being nine against Tusculum on Sept. 11.
-North Alabama's two scores marked just the second time this season that the opposition was able to score multiple goals against the Chargers.
Â
Next Time Out
-UAH will now be off until Monday, Sept. 26, when the team makes its final foray into non-conference action by welcoming Oakwood to Charger Park. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
