POSTGAME REACTION
HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team picked up a signature win on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off No. 10 Carson-Newman 3-1 at Charger Park. UAH improves to 1-1-0 on the year, while C-N slips to 2-1-0.
Turning Point
-The Chargers struck twice in the 19th minute with the trio of
Sydney Pfankuch,
Arieal Alexander, and
Melody Hoernschemeyer teamed up on both scores with Alexander and Hoernschemeyer earning the assists on Pfankuch's goals. The two quick strikes — just 33 seconds separated the goals — helped lift UAH to its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in the
Jimmy Mitchell era.
Inside the Box Score
-C-N pulled to within one goal late in the first half when Lauren Wade scored off a header in the 35th minute.
-The visiting side carried some momentum out of halftime and outshot the Chargers 5-0 in the opening 15 minutes of the stanza.
-The hosts would regain the two-goal advantage once more, however, when Hoernschemeyer notched her first goal of the season in the 60th minute on UAH's first shot of the second half.
-
Larae Breaux was phenomenal in goal for the Chargers, turning aside 14 shots to match her career high in saves.
-The visitors held a 33-11 edge in shots with a 15-5 margin in shots on goal.
-The Eagles also maintained an 11-4 edge in corners on the afternoon.
Noteworthy
-With her first two goals of the 2016 season, Pfankuch — who was UAH's leading scorer last season — now owns 11 career scores.
-The multi-goal performance for Pfankuch is her third of her career as she logged a hat trick against Oakwood on Sept. 14 last season and then scored twice later that month on Sept. 27 against Delta State.
-For Hoernschemeyer, the goal is her first since scoring on Sept. 28, 2014.
-Breaux also recorded 14 saves against North Alabama on Sept. 27, 2015, and against Valdosta State on Oct. 26, 2014.
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will hit the road for the first time in 2016 when the team travels to Montevallo on Thursday. Kickoff against the future GSC opponent is slated for 5 p.m.
