Chargers Fall on the Road at Valdosta State Monday

VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team closed out its New Year's road trip on Monday night, falling 76-66 to host Valdosta State. UAH slips to 1-9 (0-5 Gulf South Conference), while VSU improves to 7-4 (4-1 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-With the visitors leading by nine at the midway point of the third quarter, Valdosta State went on a 15-2 run that stretched into the fourth quarter that allowed the Lady Blazers to go in front with a lead that would last through the duration of the contest.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Caroline Dodd led UAH in scoring for the second straight game as she was a strong 7-for-8 from the floor while scoring 17 points.
-Dodd was one of four players to score in double figures as she was joined by Baylee Johnson who added 14 and Katie Speegle who poured in 11.
-Chandler Elder rounded out UAH's double-figure contingent as she logged a double-double by scoring 10 and grabbing 12 rebounds.
-UAH outshot the hosts by a 51.9 percent to 36.8 percent clip, but VSU was able to grab 19 offensive rebounds and outscored the Chargers 23-2 in second chance points.
-The overall rebounding battle was won by VSU who grabbed 38 boards to UAH's 35.
 
Inside the Flow
-The Chargers started out the contest strong as they ran out to a 12-5 lead before the game was even five minutes old on the way to holding an 18-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
-A run that spanned over the end of the first period and beginning of the second saw the guests score 11 of 14 points, and that 11-3 run allowed UAH to go up by double digits at 23-13 by the 8:26 mark of the second stanza.
-The hosts then went on a 13-6 run over the next five and a half minutes to close the UAH advantage to just three at 29-26, but the Chargers had an answer with a key Morgan Tipton 3-pointer that helped the Chargers go into the break up at 34-28.
-The lead would expand back to as many as nine points for the visitors on a pair of occasions in the third quarter, but with UAH in front 44-35 with just over five minutes left, the Lady Blazers closed the period on a 13-2 run to go up 48-46 heading into the final frame.
-Though UAH would make it a one-point game at 54-53 with 5:33 left in the contest, VSU closed out the game on a 22-13 run that featured a 5-for-5 showing from the floor – including three 3-pointers – to seal the victory.
 
Noteworthy
-The double-double for Elder is the first of the season for the Chargers, and it also marks the first career double-double for Elder who additionally sets a person-best in rebounding with the 12.
-The 27-of-52 showing from the floor matches the second-best shooting mark of the season for the Chargers as the team also shot 27-of-52 against North Alabama.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will return home for their first game at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall of the 2017 calendar year, welcoming Union on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
-After that contest, UAH will host Christian Brothers with that game now slated for a 1 p.m. start on Monday, Jan. 9.
