UAH Downs Kentucky State 72-62 Wednesday in Non-Conference Meeting

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team picked up a 72-62 non-conference victory on Wednesday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall over visiting Kentucky State. UAH improves to 4-1, while KSU dips to 0-4.
 
Turning Point
- The Chargers outscored the Thorobrettes 16-9 in the second quarter, taking the lead and never looking back with 21 seconds remaining on a baseline jumper by Katie Speegle to lead 28-27 at the end of the frame on the way to the 72-62 win on Wednesday.
 
Inside the Box Score
- The UAH offense boasted four players in double-figure scoring, led by Speegle with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in 25 minutes on the floor.
- Also scoring in double-digits for the Chargers included Baylee Johnson (13 points), Chandler Elder (12 points) and Aryn Sanders (10 points).
- The Chargers grabbed 29 total rebounds as a team-paced by Elder with 12 total boards – to notch the double-double – including eight defensively and four offensively.
- Sanders finished second on the roster with eight rebounds all on defense, with four other Chargers posting two boards or more.
- UAH shot 34.8 percent on three-pointers on Wednesday, as Sanders, Johnson and Foster made two, three-point baskets apiece to lead the offense.
- Johnson also posted a team-high four assists.
- Defensively, Speegle also paced the squad with three blocks and one steal.
- The Chargers shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor, including a 50 percent success rate (14-28) in the second half.
 
Inside the Flow
- After UAH opened the contest on a 7-0 run, Kentucky State posted 10 unanswered points to lead 10-7 on the way to an 18-12 advantage for the Thorobrettes in the first quarter.
- UAH dominated the second quarter against KSU, outscoring the Thorobrettes 16-9 throughout the second 10-minute frame.
- The Chargers continued its success over KSU at the outset of the second half with a 14-8 run over 4:42 to begin the third quarter to lead 42-35 with five minutes left in the stanza.
- UAH utilized a late 7-0 run to make it a 70-58 Charger advantage with 1:19 to go which helped the Blue & White seal the 72-62 nonconference victory.
 
Noteworthy
 -  Elder's 12 rebounds were the most by the senior this season, matching her career-high of 12 boards which has been recorded four previous times in her career.
- Speegle has scored 17 or more points in three straight games.
 
Next Time Out
- The Chargers return to action next Wednesday with the start of Gulf South Conference play at Montevallo.
