Valdosta State Pushes Past UAH Thursday at Spragins

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fell on Thursday night, dropping a 64-48 decision to visiting Valdosta State. UAH slips to 5-19 (4-15 GSC), while VSU improves to 17-8 (14-5 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-The Blazers held UAH to single-digits in two quarters on their way to leading more than 36 minutes in the contest.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Katie Speegle was the lone Charger to score in double figures in the contest as she knocked down five field goals on her way to scoring 12.
-Leading UAH on the glass was Chandler Elder as she grabbed eight rebounds to go along with her nine points, two assists, and two steals.
-The guests were led on the night by Aalyiah Cheatham and Madi Mitchell as both scored 17, and Mitchell had a double-double as she also collected a game-high 14 rebounds.
-For the game, Valdosta State connected on 40.7 percent of its attempts while holding UAH to a shooting mark of 33.9 percent.
-The Blazers also held the advantage on the glass by collecting 50 rebounds to the home team's 24.
 
Inside the Flow
-After the Blazers outscored UAH 16-6 in the first quarter, VSU would expand its lead to as many as 16 in the second stanza, but a 6-0 run to end the quarter from the Chargers would make it a 33-23 game at the half.
-Valdosta State then started off the third quarter with a 10-0 run that allowed the guests to expand its lead out to its largest of the night at 43-23.
-With the Blazers holding a 50-30 advantage at the end of the third, UAH went on an 8-1 run to cut the deficit to 13 at 51-38 with 6:29 left in the game, but UAH could pull no closer than 11 when it made the score 59-48 with just under two minutes left in the contest.
 
Noteworthy
-Speegle has now scored in double figures in two of the last three games, and she owns eight games in which she has reached double figures on the year.
-Elder has led the Chargers in rebounding in six of the team's last seven games.
 
Next Time Out
-UAH will wrap up the 2016-17 home slate on Saturday when West Florida visits for a 2 p.m. contest. When the two teams met in Pensacola on Dec. 31, UWF was a 71-52 winner.
