UAH Drops a Pair to Arkansas Tech and No. 23 Washburn

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team wrapped up play at the Holiday Inn Express Spikefest hosted by Arkansas Tech with a 3-1 loss (25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 12-25) to ATU followed by a 3-0 loss (19-25, 25-27, 15-25) to No. 23 Washburn. UAH dips to 9-4 overall, while ATU improves to 14-0 and WU moves to 9-3.
 
Match One: ATU 3, UAH 1 (25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 12-25)
Turning Point
- With the match tied at 1-1 in the third set, UAH cut the ATU lead to 22-20 but the Golden Suns pushed further ahead for the 25-20 win on three consecutive scores to take a 2-1 match lead on the way to the 3-1 win.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Anna Claire Johnson and Caroline Sanford paced the UAH attack with 10 kills, with Sanford holding the edge in hitting percentage at .400.
- Isabelle Barnes registered a team-high .571 hitting percentage with eight kills.
- Lorah Yonce also had a strong attacking performance with nine kills.
- Kirsten Giles registered a team-high 21 assists and three service aces in addition to rating second on the defensive end with seven digs.
- Haley Hop paced the squad with 14 digs and had zero receiving errors.
- Barnes and Jordan Grammer tied for the team lead with two total blocks apiece.
 
Noteworthy
- Hop now has eight matches with 15 digs or more.
- Barnes .571 hitting percentage was a season-best with more than 10 attacks in a contest.

Turning Point
- After UAH tied the second set 25-25, Washburn proceeded to score the following two points for the 27-25 win in the frame to give them a 2-0 lead before taking the match in three sets with a 25-15 victory in the third stanza.
 
 Inside the Box Score
- The Chargers offense was led by Anna Claire Johnson with 10 kills and a .267 hitting percentage.
- Both Caroline Sanford and Isabelle Barnes posted seven kills in the contest.
- Haley Hop paced the defense with a game-high 28 digs as well as registering three assists and one service ace.
- UAH recorded seven total blocks, led by Sanford with four on four block assists.
- The squad notched 30 assists overall in the match, with Kirsten Giles owning 14 and Sabrina Duncan registering 13 helpers.
- Giles finished second on the defense with nine digs.
 
Noteworthy
- Hop's 28 digs match a career-best, set in her freshman campaign against Georgia College (Sept. 12, 2015).
- Johnson has 10 kills or more in five contests in 2017.
