UAH Opens GSC Play at Home with Three Matches this Week

BEGINNING OF LEAGUE PLAY: UAH (9-4, 0-0 GSC) opens Gulf South Conference play at home with three matches in 2017, as the squad first matches up with Shorter (6-3, 0-0 GSC) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before hosting Valdosta State (7-3, 2-0 GSC) on Friday at 6 p.m. and West Florida (8-4, 0-0 GSC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Chargers are coming off a total of eight consecutive contests away from Huntsville after opening the season at Spragins Hall with a 4-1 record in the UAH Classic from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.
 
WEEKEND RECAP: The Chargers participated in the Holiday Inn Express Spikefest hosted by Arkansas Tech this past weekend, with the team coming away with a win over Ouachita Baptist and losses to No. 15 Central Missouri, ATU and No. 23 Washburn. UAH now owns a 9-4 record entering the week's matchups.
 
LAST SEASON IN THE GSC: The Blue & White finished GSC play last season with an 8-12 record, which included a 6-4 mark against league opponents inside Spragins Hall. Each of the Chargers three opponents this upcoming weekend reached the GSC tournament last season, with Shorter and West Florida tying as GSC Regular Season Champions with 17-3 marks within the conference.
 
DEFENSIVE ANCHOR: A native of Madison, Alabama, Haley Hop excelled as the squad's libero this past weekend with a total of 81 digs and a 6.23 digs per set average while also eclipsing 1000 digs during the Arkansas Tech Tournament. Hop's stellar weekend – which garnered her all-tournament honors at ATU – has catapulted the junior to a league-leading 5.46 digs per set, which rates well above her career average of 3.92 digs per set between her freshman and sophomore campaigns.
 
HAWKS PROFILE: Shorter also opens its league slate on Tuesday as it enters the week with a 6-3 overall record, following victories over King, UVA-Wise, Erskine and Coker this past weekend. The Hawks offense is led by Madeline Monroe with 84 kills, while Cheyenne McLemore possesses a team-high 134 digs. UAH holds an all-time record of 1-13 against Shorter.
 
BLAZERS PROFILE: Valdosta State begins the week with a 7-3 overall record and a 2-0 mark in conference play, after totaling three wins this past weekend at home over GSC foes Montevallo and West Georgia as well as Albany State. VSU's offense has been paced by Chloe Chubilleau with 109 kills, with Sydney Chick anchoring the defense with 172 digs. UAH owns a 25-21 all-time record against Valdosta State.
 
ARGOS PROFILE: West Florida starts the week with an 8-4 overall record so far in 2017, after most recently downing Northwest Missouri State, Missouri Western, Newman and Arkansas-Fort Smith in Fort Smith, Arkansas, this past weekend. The Argos attack is led by Rachel Neblett with 161 kills, while the defense is led by Logan Kael with 177 digs. UAH possesses an all-time record of 7-25 against West Florida.
