UAH Takes Series Finale 3-1 at Alaska Fairbanks Saturday

FAIRBANKS, Alaska | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team notched a WCHA series split at Alaska Fairbanks with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night in the series finale at the Carlson Center. UAH improves to 7-15-3 (6-9-1 WCHA), while UAF slips to 8-12-2 (6-9-1 WCHA).
 
Turning Point
- Austin Beaulieu scored for the second night in a row and posted what turned out to be the game-winning tally as the sophomore gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead at 10:42 of the third period just prior to a Nanook tally 24 seconds later.
 
Scoring Breakdown
- After a scoreless first frame in which UAH registered 13 shots on goal to start the game, the Chargers broke through the scoreless tie at 14:19 of the second period as Huntsville native Josh Kestner scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season. Both John Teets and Levi Wunder notched assists on the marker.
- The Chargers took the 1-0 lead into second intermission which would stand until Beaulieu generated a breakaway opportunity immediately following his exit from the penalty box and scored at 10:42 of the third to make it a 2-0 UAH advantage.
- Alaska Fairbanks did not take long to respond as the hosts ended the UAH shutout bid on a goal by Justin Young at 11:06 of the third.
- UAH went on to seal the victory on an empty-net tally by freshman Christian Rajic at 19:17 of the final frame.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Jordan Uhelski had an incredible performance between the pipes as he posted 35 saves while allowing the lone UAF tally. Uhelski – whose record improves to 7-10-2 this season – had 10 or more saves in two of the three periods including a game-high 19 saves in the second stanza.
- The Chargers registered 29 shots on goal on offense, paced by Kestner with six shots on goal.
- Eight UAH players had two or more shots on goal.
- Both sides came up empty on the power play as UAH went 0-for-5 while holding the Nanooks scoreless in two man-advantages.
- Wunder ended the game with a team-best +2 rating on the ice.
 
Noteworthy
- Uhelski has allowed one goal in a start eight times in his career and now twice against Alaska Fairbanks.
- Beaulieu scored in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
- Kestner now has 35 goals under his belt in his career at UAH, which has him now tied for eighth in the program's modern Division I era.
