Chargers GSC Tournament Run Closes with Loss to UWA Saturday

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team's 2018 campaign came to an end at the 2018 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championships on Saturday afternoon at the UWF Field House with a 3-0 loss (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) in a semifinal matchup against third-seeded West Alabama. UAH caps the year at 23-11, while UWA improves to 22-8.

- After taking an early lead with a 25-18 win in the first, West Alabama turned in another win in the second by a score of 25-12 before capping off the semifinal matchup victory with a 25-18 win in the third.
 
Inside the Action
- The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a successful attack in the first set with a .359 hitting percentage as a team, helping them to a 25-18 win.
- West Alabama opened the second set on a 15-5 run on the way to a 2-0 match lead on a 25-12 win in the second.
- The third set was tightly contested with a 14-14 tie midway through the frame, but UWA outscored the Chargers 11-4 to close out the stanza for the 25-18 win and the three-set victory.

- The Chargers offense was paced by Lorah Yonce with a team-high nine kills and a .240 hitting percentage, and she came just short of a double-double as she added 12 digs on the defensive end.
- Anna LeDuc and Kendall Scharbert tied for second on the roster with seven kills apiece.
- Haley Hop anchored the defense with a team-high 17 digs.
- Sabrina Duncan notched a double-double with 18 assists and 15 digs on the day.
 
Noteworthy
- This was the Chargers first GSC tournament semifinal matchup under third-year head coach Cade Smith, who has guided the Blue & White to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
- Hop finishes her career as one of the most prolific defensive performers in program history and the GSC, as she ends her time at UAH with a program-record 2036 career digs and is one of just seven GSC players to eclipse the 2000-dig milestone.
- The Chargers seniors Rachel Burden, Haley Hop, Anna LeDuc and Lorah Yonce owned a career winning percentage of .609 (81-53) over the past four seasons.
