Three UAH Legends Honored with Named Coaching Spaces

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville Department of Athletics has announced the dedication of the Lennie Acuff Men's Basketball Suite and the Doug Ross Hockey Suite in addition to the naming of the David W. Cain Head Coach's Office.
 
"The incredible impact that these three individuals have had on UAH and Charger Athletics simply cannot be deduced in wins and championships," said UAH Director of Athletics Dr. E. J. Brophy. "Their collective decades of positivity, success, and commitment to student-athletes has been invaluable to Huntsville and to our University, and we are extremely appreciative of the many donors who helped fund the naming of these areas. These three coaches are all quite deserving of these honors."
 
Acuff has been at the helm of the UAH basketball program for the past 21 seasons and has become the winningest coach in Gulf South Conference history with a career record of 413-206 at UAH entering the 2018-19 season.
 
Under Acuff the Chargers have enjoyed 19 winning seasons, appeared in the Gulf South Conference tournament 17 times, won eight GSC regular season titles, captured three GSC tournament championships, and earned 10 trips to the NCAA tournament. For his efforts, Acuff has been named the NABC District Coach of the Year four times (2000, 2011, 2012, and 2013), and he has been honored as the GSC Coach of the Year a conference-record eight times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2016).
 
Ross was the head coach for the UAH hockey program for 25 years and led the Chargers to 15 winning seasons from 1982-2007.
 
During his 25 years at UAH, Ross compiled 451 wins in his career at the helm of the Chargers, winning two NCAA Division II National Championships in 1996 and 1998 while also directing UAH to two College Hockey America regular season titles and two NCAA Division I tournament berths. Prior to building the UAH hockey program, Ross was an All-CCHA performer at Bowling Green and played with Team USA at the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria.
 
Cain is currently in his 20th season at the helm of the UAH men's and women's cross country and track & field programs, having built the program from the ground up since starting at UAH in 1998.
 
In his time at UAH, Cain has guided the Chargers cross country teams to five women's GSC Championships (1999, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2013) and four men's GSC Championships (2007, 2011, 2012, 2013), while earning GSC Cross Country Coach of the Year on five occasions (1999, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013). Cain has additionally seen a bevy of success with the Chargers track & field programs, having won the men's GSC Championship twice (2017, 2018) after two women's Peach Belt Conference Championships (2013, 2014) and one men's PBC Championship (2013). Cain has also been named USTFCCCA South Region Coach of the Year 14 times so far in his career.
 
All three of these named areas have been approved by The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.
