HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team opened up play at the 2018 Charger Chillout on Thursday, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 13-0 in five innings before falling to No. 6 Southern Indiana 9-1 in five innings. The Chargers are now 6-2 on the season.

Alaina Hampton belted a three-run jack in the top of the third, breaking a scoreless tie and sparking a five-run inning that would be more than enough thanks to a terrific performance from
Layton Murphy in the circle.

-The Chargers pounded out 12 hits in the contest including seven that were for extra bases led by
Brooke Miller who went 3-for-4 with each being a double as she drove in a team-best four runs.

Kiara Akles also had a three-hit day including a home run that led to her logging three RBI, and UAH had four players who logged a multi-RBI game as in addition to Hampton's three,
Taylor Wascavage drove in a pair.

Jada Hayes accounted for UAH's other hits for extra bases as both had a triple in the contest.
-UAH also collected six walks in the game with both Hampton and
Shannon Long drawing a pair.
-Murphy picked up the complete game shutout, limiting Kentucky Wesleyan to just two hits while striking out four and walking only one.

-After a pair of scoreless innings and with
Shelby Booker and Long on base after singling and walking, respectively, Hampton hit an absolute bomb out to left to give UAH a 3-0 lead, and both Akles and Miller would drive in runs later in the inning to put the Chargers up 6-0.
-In the fourth, UAH would send 11 batters to the plate in a six-run inning that saw Hammonds, Akles, Miller, and Wascavage all drive in runs.
-Akles would homer in the top of the fifth while Miller also doubled in a run to produce the 13-0 finale.

-The shutout is the first of the year for the Chargers as Murphy moves to 5-1 on the season while tossing her fourth complete game and moving her ERA to a 1.24 mark.
-Hammonds now has a team-best 10 RBI on the season, while Akles has a team-high 10 hits.
-The two triples for UAH in the game mark the first time since May 11, 2014, against Rollins that the team has had multiple triples in a contest.
