UAH Picks Up a Pair of Victories on Final Day of Chillout

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team closed out play at the 2018 Charger Chillout on Friday, picking up another pair of victories with a 15-2 win over Ohio Dominican in six innings followed by an 8-3 victory over Georgia Southwestern. The Chargers now sit at 8-2 on the season.

-The Chargers will open up Gulf South Conference play next weekend at the GSC Opening Weekend Festival in Montgomery, Alabama, taking on GSC foes Lee, Delta State, and West Georgia.

Game Changer
-With the Chargers leading 2-0 going into the fourth inning, UAH busted the contest wide open with a four-run fourth that put the team up comfortably by a 6-0 score.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers outhit ODU 13-4 in the contest with five different players having a multi-hit game led by Kiara Akles who had three while Reagan Malone, Shannon Long, Alaina Hampton, and Shelby Booker each had a pair in the game.
-Booker drove in a team-best four runs in the game, with Hampton plating three and both Akles and Long driving in a pair, and Malone crossed the plate a team-high three times in the contest.
-Akles earned the win in the circle, scattering four hits in four innings while striking out three and walking just two.
 
Key Plays
-The tone for the contest was started in the top of the first when Akles tripled in Malone to make it 1-0, and the Chargers would go up 2-0 in the third when Long reached on an infield single that plated Booker.
-Booker then sparked the big fourth when she drove in a pair on a base hit, while Long picked up her second RBI of the game before another Charger would score to put the team up 6-0.
-After Ohio Dominican scored twice in the home half of the fourth to make it 6-2, the Chargers scored three more times in the fifth to go up 9-2, and a three-run jack from Hampton helped UAH score six times in the sixth to create the 15-2 final.
 
Noteworthy
­-Hampton's home run is her team-best third of the season, and she now has totaled a team-high 11 RBI.
-Five of Hampton's seven hits has been for extra bases.
-Akles is now 2-1 on the season in the circle, and she has totaled 20 strikeouts in four appearances.

Game Changer
-A four-run second inning that included two steals of home provided all the cushion that the Chargers would need in the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-UAH outhit GSW 6-5, but the Chargers also totaled three sac bunts, eight walks, and four steals in the game to aid the offensive effort.
-Jada Hayes had a particularly strong game at the plate, driving in two runs on three hits while scoring four times, and her two-RBI performance was matched by Ashley Cornell.
-Both Malone and Hampton drew a team-high three walks in the game.
-Layton Murphy was strong in the circle, going the distance yet again while scattering five hits and three runs in the seven innings while also striking out nine in the game.
 
Key Plays
-The Chargers sent seven to the plate in the second inning which featured a pair of key sacrifices from Brooke Miller and Cornell, and in addition to RBI from Hayes and Cornell, the Chargers also got runs when Hayes stole home followed by a steal of him by Booker later in the frame which made it a 4-0 lead for UAH.
-UAH added a run on a productive groundout by Booker in the fourth, and though GSW would score three times in the fifth to pull within two, an RBI from Long in the sixth in addition to a run-scoring triple from Hayes and a base hit RBI from Cornell in the seventh created the 8-3 finale.
 
Noteworthy
-Murphy establishes a season-high with the nine strikeouts while pushing her season total to 31.
-The Chargers have now had four steals in four games on the year including the two contests on Friday, and the team has totaled 21 stolen bases.
-With five more sacrifice bunts on Friday, the Chargers have now totaled 13 on the season in addition to the seven sac flies on the year.
