UAH Slips in Overtime to No. 5 Minnesota State at VBC

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team fell in overtime to No. 5 Minnesota State by a final score of 3-2 at the Von Braun Center in the WCHA series opener on Friday night. UAH dips to 10-19-2 (9-13-2 WCHA), while MSU rises to 22-7-0 (18-5-0 WCHA).
 
Turning Point
- After Minnesota State evened the game at 2-2 on a goal by Marc Michaelis at 17:50 of the third, the Mavericks were able to nab the WCHA victory in overtime as CJ Suess scored the game-winner 27 seconds into the period.
 
Scoring Breakdown
- The Mavericks broke through the scoreless tie – which lasted over 35 minutes of play to start the game – at 15:38 of the second period as Parker Tuomie gave MSU a 1-0 advantage.
- UAH evened the score up at 1-1 when Kurt Gosselin sent in a shot from the blue line at 1:14 of the third, thanks to assists from Jordan Larson and Hans Gorowsky.
- The Chargers generated a 2-1 lead less than a minute later as Christian Rajic sent in his ninth of the season on the power play at 2:35, with assists going to Madison Dunn and Josh Kestner on the play.
- MSU tied the game at 1-1 at 17:50 of the third on Michaelis' goal before Suess gave the Mavericks the 3-2 victory 27 seconds into overtime.
 
Inside the Box Score
- Jordan Uhelski was outstanding in goal for the Chargers, stopping 10 or more shots in each period and finishing with a total of 39 saves. Despite his impressive performance, his record dips to 10-14-2 on the second.
- Minnesota State was held to zero goals in five power-play chances, while UAH converted one of its six man-advantages.
- UAH put 19 shots on goal, paced by Gosselin and Kestner with three shots on target each.
- The Chargers went 38-for-76 in the face-off circle.
 
Noteworthy
- Kestner now leads the Chargers with 27 points on 20 goals and seven assists, and he's totaled at least one point in eight of the past 11 games.
- Gosselin is on a three-game streak of at least one point.
