UAH Takes Series Finale to Complete Sweep of No. 18 VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a series sweep of No. 18 Valdosta State, winning the final game of the weekend 8-4 to push its win streak to five games. The Chargers move to 18-6 (8-4 Gulf South Conference), while VSU slips to 17-7 (7-5 GSC).

Game Changer
-Jada Hayes hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth to put the Chargers up 4-2, and after the Blazers tied the game in the bottom half, she entered the game in relief in the circle and held VSU to just three hits over 3.1 innings while picking up the victory.

Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers tallied 10 hits to Valdosta State's seven in the game, and Shelby Booker led the team with a 3-for-4 day while scoring three times.
-Both Reagan Malone and Hayes went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored twice, and it was Hayes who led the guests with the four RBI.
-In addition to allowing only three hits in her relief appearance, Hayes also struck out a pair.

Key Plays
-The scoring started in the bottom of the second when Valdosta State homered to go up 2-0, and the score remained that way until the top half of the second when the grand slam by Hayes made it a 4-2 lead for the Chargers.
-The Blazers, however, had an answer with a two-run homer that knotted the contest up at 4-4, and though VSU would threaten to take the lead with runners at second and third and just one out in the bottom of the fifth, Hayes would get a strikeout and induce a liner to keep it tied.
-Taylor Wascavage then gave the Chargers the advantage in the top of the sixth as she reached on a fielder's choice allowing Booker to score, and that was followed up by an RBI single from Amber Hammonds to make it a 6-4 lead for the guests.
-Hayes retired the Blazers in order in the sixth, the Chargers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the visiting half of the seventh, and Hayes worked around a two-out single in the bottom frame to seal the contest at 8-4.

Noteworthy
-This is the second series sweep at VSU in UAH's last three trips to Valdosta, matching the same performance that the 2014 team achieved, and the Chargers have won six of the last seven meetings with VSU dating back to last season.
-UAH totaled eight home runs during the weekend.
-UAH has scored 200 runs on the year including 64 during the current winning streak.
-Hayes pushes her RBI total on the year to 20 which is tied for second on the team, and she now has three home runs on the year.
-Hayes also is now 2-0 on the year in the circle with wins in back-to-back games.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will be off until Saturday when Christian Brothers visits the Rocket City. The doubleheader on Saturday is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
