UAH Picks Up Fifth Saturday Sweep, Defeats No. 16 West Florida in Pair

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team continued its hot streak, picking up yet another Saturday sweep to earn another conference series win as the Chargers defeated No. 16 West Florida 3-2 in the opener and 9-6 in the nightcap. With the victory, UAH pushes its win streak to 10 games and improves overall to 23-6 (13-4 Gulf South Conference), and UWF slips to 17-11 (8-7 GSC).

Next Time Out
-The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game that is slated to start at 1 p.m.

UAH 3, West Florida 2
Game Changer
-Alaina Hampton hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth, and Jada Hayes  pitched a perfect 1.1 innings of relief for the save to help the Chargers earn the victory.

Inside the Box Score
-UAH picked up five hits in the game to West Florida's four.
-Each of the five hits came from five different players for UAH.
-The Chargers also had three sacrifice bunts and a sac fly, and the team also drew five walks in the game.
-UAH picked up two more stolen bases in the game, and Hampton was strong behind the plate, throwing out two would-be base stealers from UWF.
-Kiara Akles earned the win in the circle, going 5.2 innings and scattering four hits while allowing just two runs of which only one was earned, and she struck out four and walked only one before giving way to Hayes who struck out a pair.

Key Plays
-The Chargers would threaten right off the bat in the first inning but could not cash in, but the team made sure to capitalize in the second when a sac fly from Ashley Cornell plated Taylor Wascavage who had led off the inning by being hit by a pitch.
-An unearned tally for UWF in the bottom of the second tied the game at 1-1, and the score would remain that way until the top of the fourth when Brooke Miller walked before Hampton homered to center to put the Chargers up 3-1.
-Akles induced a double play to end the UWF fourth and Hampton threw out a potential base stealer to end the fifth before back-to-back doubles for the hosts in the bottom of the sixth pulled the Argos to within one.
-Hayes then got a fly out to end the sixth and retired UWF in order in the seventh wrap up the game.

Noteworthy
-Akles moves to 7-2 on the year in the circle with the victory, and the save for Hayes represents the first by a Charger this year.
-Hampton now owns six home runs on the year, and she has thrown out eight potential base stealers on the year.

UAH 9, West Florida 6
Game Changer
-Shelby Booker continued her torrid ways at the plate, going 3-for-4 and driving in what would be the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning.

Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers again outhit West Florida, this time by a 9-8 margin.
-Joining Booker with a multi-hit game were Miller and Cornell who both had a pair in the game.
-Miller knocked in three runs including one on a solo homer, and Cornell and Akles both had a pair of RBI in the game.
-UAH stole four bags in the contest, while West Florida did not attempt to steal a base.
-Hayes earned the win in the circle in the nightcap, going 2.2 innings and working around three hits in relief of Layton Murphy who went 4.1 innings with five hits allowed.

Key Plays
-West Florida grabbed an early 2-0 lead by scoring in the bottom of the first, but the Chargers sent 10 to the plate in the top of the second and showed great patience in drawing four walks to allow singles from both Akles and Miller to drive in a pair of runs en route to scoring in total five times in the inning.
-The score remained that way until the hosts had a three-run homer tie it up at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but as has been the case so many times this season, UAH had an immediate answer once again as Booker singled in Cornell who reached earlier in the inning on a double.
-The Chargers then added insurance runs in the top of the seventh with Miller hitting the solo homer and Cornell singling in a pair of runs, and though UWF would score a run, Hayes would strand a pair of runners to end the game.

Noteworthy
-Miller hits her second home run of the year, and she now has 22 RBI on the season.
-Hayes is now 3-0 in nine appearances.
-The home run by UWF is just the eighth allowed in 29 games by UAH pitching while the Chargers have now totaled 34.
