Gallagher's Goal Gives Chargers 2-1 Win in 2OT Friday

HUNTSVILLE | Steven Gallagher scored in the second overtime period, lifting The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Union in a contest that was played in a constant downpour on Friday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 5-7-1 (3-3-1 Gulf South Conference), while the Bulldogs slip to 6-6-0 (4-5-0 GSC).
 
Turning Points
-Union got on the board first thanks to an own goal, putting the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 in the 13th minute.
-The Chargers then leveled the contest in the 32nd when Antonio Goncalves scored, and the game would remain 1-1 all the way through to the end of regulation.
-After a scoreless first stanza of overtime, UAH would end the contest in the 104th when Michael Weston crossed it in from the right side to the six-yard box where Gallagher was there to bury it, sparking a raucous celebration and producing the 2-1 final.
 
Inside the Box Score
-With Union playing with 10 men for the majority of the contest after having a player sent off in the 15th minute, the Chargers dominated Union in shots by a 22-9 margin including a 7-1 edge in attempts that were on target.
-The Bulldogs earned four corners in the first half on their way to owning a 7-5 edge for the game.
-Goncalves fired off a team-high five shots in the game, and both he and Gallagher had a team-best two that were on target.
-Drew Kelly made a save to earn the win in goal for the Chargers.
 
Noteworthy
-Gallagher's game-winner is the senior's first goal in his two seasons in the Blue and White.
-Goncalves also logs his first goal as a Charger.
-Nine different Chargers have now scored on the season.
-Weston's assist is the first of his career for the freshman.
-Kelly earns his third win of the season.
-UAH is now 2-1-1 in overtime this season.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers are set to close the homestand on Sunday against Christian Brothers. The game is currently scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Charger Park.
