UAH Set for Semifinal Showdown with West Florida on Friday

11/14/2019 8:41:00 AM

HUNTSVILLE | For the third straight season, The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team has reached the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Men's Soccer Championship, as the seventh-seeded Chargers will take on No. 3 seed West Florida at 2:30 p.m. at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Florida.

UAH (7-8-3) advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 win at Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday, while UWF (12-1-3) was a 3-1 winner over Spring Hill in the quarterfinals.

The Chargers dominated AUM, putting together one of their most complete performances of the season as UAH outshot the opponent by a 17-8 margin including a wide 7-2 edge in attempts on target.

Vicente Arratia scored the opening goal and assisted Michael Weston on the team's second score of the contest. Sealing the contest with the third goal was Andres Rodriguez from Antonio Goncalves.

UWF's win over Spring Hill was a much tighter affair with both sides firing off 14 shots of which six were on target despite SHC playing down a man for nearly 50 minutes.

When UAH and the Argos met earlier in the season in Huntsville, West Florida was a 2-0 winner as the guests scored just before the halftime break and tacked on an insurance goal in the 77th minute. UWF controlled play through much of the contest, outshooting the Chargers by a 23-16 margin while racking up seven corners and conceding just one to UAH.

The Chargers have faced UWF in the conference tournament nine times in the past which represents the opponent UAH has faced the most in the postseason, and the Argos hold a 6-1-2 record in those meetings.

The two teams met in the semifinals last year with UWF scoring late in the first half and UAH answering just 90 seconds into the second half, and the game would end deadlocked at 1-1 with the Argos advancing 4-2 on penalties.

The winner of this year's rematch will take on the winner of No. 1 seed Mississippi College and fourth-seeded Lee in the championship game on Sunday.

UAH is aiming to make its sixth all-time appearance in the GSC championship game.
