Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UAH Holds Off TNU in 66-65 Victory at Spragins

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fended off a late comeback push from visiting Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday night, winning 66-65 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 2-3 with the victory, while the Trojans slip to 3-2.

Turning Point
-Aryn Sanders would get a layup to go at the 4:29 mark of the fourth quarter to push UAH's lead out to its largest margin of the night at 62-52, and the Chargers would need that cushion as TNU outscored the hosts 13-4 the rest of the way but were unable to get a last-second try to fall.

Inside the Box Score
-Sanders knocked down nine shots on her way to scoring a team-best 23 points while also grabbing seven rebounds, picking up four steals, and handing out two assists.
-Logging a double-double to join Sanders in double figures in scoring was Katie Speegle who finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds including seven on the offensive end, and she also matched Holly Harris with a team-best three assists.
-Olivia Pepperman paced the Trojans with 25 points and seven boards.
-For the game, the Chargers shot 33.8 percent, while TNU connected on 42.4 percent of its attempts.
-The visitors won the rebounding battle by a 44-43 margin.
-Two key differences in the game came in second-chance points which UAH won by a 16-12 difference and points off turnovers in which the Chargers held an 18-11 advantage.

Inside the Flow
-Trevecca scored the game's first bucket, but Selena Pruitt hit a 3-pointer on the next possession, ultimately giving the Chargers a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night, and UAH would lead by as many as seven on its way to holding a 18-14 edge going into the second quarter.
-The Trojans would narrow the gap to just two early in the second stanza and would have it down to three on two other occasions, but a 5-0 spurt punctuated by a Sloan Mann old-fashioned 3-point play put the Chargers ahead at 27-19 just past the midway point of the period.
-After the guests made it a 31-28 game in favor of UAH at the half and then cut the deficit to one on the first possession of the third quarter, the Chargers would score seven straight to go back up by eight at 38-30 less than two minutes into the period, and the team would take a 55-46 lead into the fourth.
-With the score 58-52 with 5:31 remaining in the game, Sanders would score four straight to give the Chargers their largest cushion at 62-52 before the Trojans attempted their late comeback effort that ultimately UAH would thwart.

Noteworthy
-The double-double is the first of the year for Speegle who now has recorded six in her career.
-This is the second 20-point game of the season for Sanders who is leading UAH in scoring with 16.4 points per game.
-With 10 on Thursday night, the Chargers have now reached double figures in steals in three games this season after reaching at least 10 in just five games a season ago.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will open up conference play on Saturday, welcoming West Georgia to The Stable at 2 p.m.
