Swalve's Dramatic Shot Aids No. 11 UAH in 96-83 OT Win Over UWG

HUNTSVILLE | It was another thriller for the No. 11 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team on Saturday as Seth Swalve hit a 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime in which the Chargers would ultimately prevail 96-83 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall over West Georgia. UAH improves to 4-0 (1-0 Gulf South Conference), while UWG falls to 1-5 (0-1 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-After West Georgia with eight seconds remaining in regulation missed the front end of a 1-and-1 situation at the charity stripe and JJ Kaplan secured the defensive rebound, Swalve would find his way into the corner where he alluded a pair of Wolves before getting his game-tying shot off, and UAH then outscored the guests 17-4 in the extra period to secure the win.
 
Inside the Box Score
-UAH had five players reach double figures with Kaplan's 20 points leading the way, and the redshirt junior also was a beast on the glass, grabbing 17 rebounds to record a double-double.
-Swalve finished the evening with 15 points, while both Sam Orf and Triston Chambers scored 14.
-Max Shulman rounded out the quintet of double-figure scorers as he matched Orf with a team-best four 3-pointers on his way to scoring 12 while also grabbing seven rebounds.
-Kerney Lane handed out a team-high four assists.
-The Wolves were paced by Kovi Tate who scored 20.
-For the contest, UWG outshot the Chargers by a 45.9 percent to 44.4 percent clip, but UAH was 18-for-39 from downtown while holding the guests to a 9-for-30 showing from 3-point range.
-UAH won the battle on the glass by a 48-39 margin.
-The reserves for the Chargers outscored UWG's by a 32-10 margin.
 
Inside the Flow
-The hosts started the contest strong with a 7-0 run finished by a Dalton Barkley triple gave UAH a 14-7 lead at the 15:49 mark of the opening half, but the Wolves then took control of the game, pushing out to as much as a 12-point lead before carrying a 50-41 lead into the half.
-The UWG advantage ballooned to 16 at 63-47 with 15:44 remaining in the game, but the Chargers would eventually narrow the gap to just five at 68-63 with 7:14 left after a Swalve 3-pointer.
-The Wolves had an answer, however, scoring five straight to go back up by 10 at 73-63 with 5:22 left, but an Orf trey sparked an 11-0 run with Kaplan's bucket with just under two minutes left pushing the Chargers all the way back in front with a 74-73 lead.
-After the lead exchanged hands three times leading to a 79-76 advantage for West Georgia with 16 seconds left before the Swalve 3-pointer tied it at 79-79.
-Orf started overtime with another triple, and though the Wolves would briefly pull back within one, the Chargers would hit two more 3-pointers and go 6-for-6 from the charity stripe to never trail in the extra five minutes.
 
Noteworthy
-This is UAH's second consecutive dramatic win over West Georgia at The Stable as the Chargers won 68-66 on a late Kaplan bucket in the opening round of the GSC tournament last season.
-Matching his career best with the 17 rebounds, Kaplan has now totaled 54 rebounds in four games against West Georgia over the past two seasons.
-This is Swalve's second career buzzer-beating 3-pointer to force overtime as he also hit one against Valdosta State on Jan. 25, 2018.
-Lane is leading the team with 11 assists on the young season to go along with just two turnovers.
 
Next Time Out
-UAH will return to action at home on Monday, remaining in GSC play when Auburn Montgomery visits. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
